Allah Ta'ala commands us in the Qur'an to uphold ties of kinship: “Fear Allah in whose name you make demands on one another and also in respect of your families.” (Surah An-Nisa - Verse 1)
“And those who join that which Allah has commanded that it should be joined (family ties).” (Surah Ar-Ra'd - Verse 21)
There are many virtues for maintaining family ties. Some are listed below:
A SIGN OF IMAN
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should honour his guest. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should maintain his ties of kinship. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak well or remain silent.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
MEANS OF INCREASING SUSTENANCE
Hazrat Anas (R) reported that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Anyone who desires the expansion of his provision and to have life prolonged, should maintain ties of kinship.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
DOUBLE REWARD
Hazrat Salman ibn Aamir (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Sadaqah given to a poor man is one Sadaqah, but when it is given to a relative, it is actually two. It is Sadaqah and an act of kindness to a family member.” (Ahmad and Tirmizi)
