Since Wudhu involves washing of certain body limbs with clean water several times daily, Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) urged moderation during ablution.
It is reported that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) used a minimal amount of water of just one Mudd (container measuring 775ml but not more than 1.03 litres in volume) for Wudhu and one Saa' for Ghusl (approximately 4.1 litres). (Sunan Abi Dawood)
When Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saw Sa’d performing Wudhu he said: “What is this? You are wasting water.” Sa’d replied: “Can there be wastefulness while performing ablution?” Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Yes, even if you perform it in a flowing river.” (Ibn Majah)
In the present climate of water shortage and drought, Muslims are urged to regulate and minimise water usage as far as possible. The following points should be considered:
1. use 1lt or less
Aim to use only one litre of water or even less for Wudhu – practice this by using a utensil instead of using the tap
2. use a small flow
When using a tap, open it just a little to use a small flow of water. Letting water flow freely from the tap wastes water unnecessarily. Turn off the tap between each step. Use only the minimum required amount per step
3. affix an aerator
Affixing a water restrictor will help save water. Water restrictors – available at most hardware
stores – can save as much as 50% of water use.
