Crazy Ring Tones

Young and old, poor and rich even the street-sweeper, enjoy the technology of probably the most prized of communication and entertainment tools in the form of the cell phone.

Nowadays, cell phones can download a wide range of ring tones. As Muslims, the "wide range" is confined and restricted to only permissible tones. Musical tones of English and Hindi songs (not to mention others) are totally prohibited - Haraam.

It is indeed unfortunate to observe Muslims indulging in the use of these Haraam ring tones.

The situation is worsened by these ring tones ringing within the precincts of the Masjid. Some Mussallies have blatantly ignored the severe prohibition of playing music in the Masjid, nay even in Madinah, Makkah and right before the Holy Ka'aba!

Once Hazrat Umar (RA) was engaged in Salaah. A man came with something in his hand and threw it in front with a bang; and thereafter engaged himself in Salaah. When Hazrat Umar (RA) finished his own Salaah, he reprimanded the man and said: "You have caused disturbance to those who pray". (Kitab al-I’tesam, Shatibi)

We can imagine what he would have done to someone with a musical ring tone blaring across the sacred atmosphere of the Masjid whilst the entire congregation is engrossed in Salaah!!
