Merits & method of Istikharah

Istikharah is a priceless teaching of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) – a gift for every Muslim. Istikharah means to seek goodness from Allah Ta'ala in a matter of importance in one's life. Through Istikahrah a person draws from the favours of Allah Ta'ala.

Nabi r used to teach Istikharah to the Sahabah y, like the Qur'an is taught to children. It is mentioned in a Hadith that, "One who does Istikharah shall not fail and one who makes Mashwarah (consults) shall not regret.”

Method: Perform two Rakats Nafl Salah for Istikharah. After the Salah, recite the following Du'a:

Translation: O Allah, I ask You with certainty for good through Your Knowledge, and seek ability through Your Power, and beg of You through Your infinite Bounty. For surely You have all Power and I have none. You are All Knowing and I know nothing. You are the Great Knower of all that is unseen. O Allah, if in Your Knowledge this matter is good for my faith (Deen), for my livelihood, and for the outcome of my affairs, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me therein. But if in Your Knowledge, this matter be bad for my faith (Deen) for my livelihood, and for the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and ordain for me good wherever it be, and cause me to be pleased with it

While reciting this du'a when one reaches 'hazal amr' (this matter) at both places ponder over the matter.

As a shorter version of Istikharah one may recite the dua “Allahumma Khir Li Wakh-tar Li” 11 times in addition to the above or when wanting to decide on the spur of the moment.
