Among the etiquette and requirements of an Islamic burial, is to hasten in burying the deceased and not to delay in this regard.
Hazrat Ali (RA) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to him: “O Ali! Do not delay in three things: Salah when its time sets in, Janazah Salah when it is present, and the Nikah of an unmarried girl when a suitable and compatible partner is found.” (Tirmizi)
In light of the above, the jurists have mentioned that delaying the Janazah Salah without a valid reason e.g. anticipating a larger congregation, is Makrooh. (Raddul Muhtar)
Whilst delays may occur for unavoidable reasons, at times the Janazah is deliberately delayed. This practice is against the spirit of the above mentioned Hadith.
Muslims are therefore urged to be cognisant of this Sunnah, and not unnecessarily delay the burial of the deceased.
