Honouring and revering what is sanctified is an integral part of Iman. Showing respect and reverence to the salient symbols of Islam is actually showing honour and respect to Allah Ta'ala. The Masjid is the house of Allah Ta'ala and among the salient symbols of Islam. Respect and honour for the Masjid is of paramount importance.
One important etiquette of the Masjid is to refrain from raising one's voice and worldly talk in the Masjid. This rule is applicable at all times, even when there is no one else in the Masjid. To raise one's voice and cause disturbance whilst others are in the Masjid is a greater violation.
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mentioned fifteen signs of Qiyamat. One of them was, “…voices will be raised in the Masjid.” (Tirmizi)
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “A time is soon to dawn upon the Ummah when people will discuss worldly affairs in the Masjid. Do not sit with such people, for Allah has no need for them.” (Shuabul Iman)
Hazrat Wathilah bin Asqa' (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Keep away children, insane people and buying and selling from the Masjid.” (Ibn Majah)
In terms of children attending the Masjid, children who are under the age of seven should not be brought to the Masjid, as a child of this age is generally not of the age of discernment. A child of seven years could be brought to the Masjid provided he has been trained in the matters of Taharat (purity) and does not cause disturbance.
