Q: Is it permissible for a woman in Haidh recite the Quran or touch the Quran?

A: The Hadith is very clear in this regard, that a lady in Haidh is not permitted to recite the Holy Quran.

The following Hadith appears in Tirmizi Shareef; “A women in Haidh and a person in the state of impurity should not recite anything of the Quran.” (Tirmizi #131)

Imam Tirmizi (Rahimahullah) further states that this was the opinion of majority of the Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum), the Tabieen and those who followed them like Hazrat Sufyan Thauri, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak, Imam Shafiee, Imam Ahmad bin Hambal and Imam Ishaq bin Rahawaih (Rahimahumullah). They say that a woman in Haidh and a person in the state of impurity should not recite anything of the Quran except a portion of an Ayat (a few words at a time). They have permitted a woman in Haidh and a person in the state of impurity to make zikr and recite Tasbeeh.

This is also the opinion of the Hanafi Mazhab.

Non Quranic Duas may be recited and used for supplication in Haidh. Similarly, Quranic duas may be recited with the intention of du`aa.
