These cameras are expected to be installed in each bus, and will monitor passenger areas and the bus exterior. This project, according to the municipality, is part of “ongoing efforts to strengthen passenger safety, improve security monitoring and support efficient public transport operations.”

The municipality has also stressed that this surveillance initiative is in compliance with privacy legislation. It stated, “In line with the Protection of Personal Information (POPIA) Act, the Municipality hereby wishes to inform all passengers that video recording is in operation when boarding People Mover buses.”
