King Goodwill Zwelithini’s call for the curb and control of liquor outlets and taverns is commendable.
The ‘mushrooming’ of taverns in urban and rural areas has indeed become an unfortunate and facile means with which alcohol is made available to communities, particularly the youth.
This is impacting negatively not only on Zulu culture but all cultures across South Africa.
The accessibility and abuse of intoxicants have, to a great extent, contributed to the social breakdown of too many in our society.
The Department of Trade and Industry’s ‘proposal’ of national liquor policy needs to be fast-tracked as it is unacceptable that liquor outlets are currently allowed within 500m of schools, places of worship and recreational facilities.
