Over 30 youth aged between 12-20 attended the event, which took place at Madrasah Ihsan in Sea Cow Lake, Durban. The programme opened with a Qir'at recitation, followed by an insightful presentation on the origins of this auspicious occasion of sacrifice. This included the incredible story of Ebrahim's (AS) life, alongside the lessons of sacrifice and humility that can be adopted in today’s age.
The different meanings of sacrifice were also discussed, such as exchanging things in one’s life for others more important and worthy; an example being offering time and wealth in exchange for one’s faith.
This topic also drew parallels to the current situation in Palestine. Attendees were asked to look closely at the strength of those suffering in Gaza; to think carefully about the sacrifices countless families have made; and continue to make; during their plight.
The virtues and laws of Qurbani were then explained, thoroughly detailing rules and regulations concerning when, how, and by who it should be performed, alongside other applicable information.
The last item on the itinerary was a live demonstration of slaughtering a live animal, in which a skilled guest provided practical details and knowledge simultaneously. This helped introduce the young muslimahs to the practice and instil them with the confidence needed to partake in their own Qurbani.
The programme closed with attendees being provided scrumptious refreshments, giving them a moment to socialise with the hosts and other guests.
“It was nice. I also learnt something new,” said one attendee. “I never knew the story about Ebrahim (AS).”
Another remarked, “It was really nice. It was spiritually guiding. It taught me a lot of things that I never knew and answered a lot of questions.”
