With humble beginnings of providing 50 sandwiches a day to hungry children at a nearby school, Darul Ihsan Centre’s ‘Feed a Pupil’ project has grown and seen sustained success over the past few years. The project provides prepared sandwiches to hungry pupils at local state schools.
Currently over 45000 sandwiches are prepared monthly for distribution to 55 schools in the greater Durban area. Most of the children who receive these sandwiches are indigent and come to school on an empty stomach. The sandwiches provide a wholesome nutrition for these children and consequently they are able to concentrate on their learning and take full advantage of their school day.
The sandwiches are prepared by about 250 housewives in various residential areas. Each home volunteer contributes an average of 3 loaves of bread and fillings for the sandwiches. In certain areas fillings for the sandwiches are provided by Darul Ihsan.
A group of housewives in a designated area have a co-ordinator and Darul Ihsan collects the sandwiches from the respective co-ordinators and the sandwiches are distributed the same morning to the schools. Packets for the sandwiches are clearly printed with bold type showing that this is an initiative of the ‘Muslim Empowerment Fund’ of Darul Ihsan Centre giving credit to the Muslims of South Africa in the recipient's mind. This would inadvertently engineer a positive impression of Islam in the child's mind and could be the catalyst for him/her eventually embracing the Deen.
May Allah Ta’ala reward all the dedicated volunteers and all those who contribute to this project in both worlds. We invite you to take your slice of rewards and support this project with your duas and contribution.
