It is Fard-e-Kifayah (compulsory by a few on behalf of the community) to bathe the deceased according to the laws of Shariah.
Ali (RA) reports that Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said;
“Whomsoever performed ablution (Ghusal) of the mayyit (deceased) and thereafter shrouded (kafn) the mayyit, applied scent, carried the mayyit on his shoulders, read Janazah Salah; and concealed the defects of the deceased despite knowing it, then his (person who conducted the ablution) sins will be concealed like the day his mother gave birth.” (Ibn Majah)
