The ‘Place of Safety’ is a child and youth centre which offers transitional residential care to more than 65 children who are deemed to be at risk, or in need of care and protection from their families and communities. Admission is only considered when alternate family placements are found to be unsuitable or unavailable. The admission of children is either by a registered social worker or a police officer as specified in the Child Care Act.
The facility caters for children who are alleged to be in need of care due to abuse, neglect, abandonment and those with behaviour problems.
All the children at centre and some staff members were present in the hall for a gift presentation of wheel chairs, blankets, stationery packs and biscuits by Hajee Moosa Salim and Anwar Hamid on behalf of the Muslim Empowerment Fund.
The children, staff and Ms Pamela Xuma – the social worker at the centre - expressed their excitement and deep appreciation of the gifts.
The Muslim Empowerment Fund intends to make regular donations to the facility as and when items are made available.
