The Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre hosted a special series of programmes titled “Honouring Our Pious Elders (1860–1960)”, in recognition and appreciation of the pioneering scholars and early Muslim personalities who established and strengthened Islam in KwaZulu-Natal. The programmes were held on the back of the book launched earlier, titles, The Early Guiding Stars of KwaZulu-Natal - 1860 to 1960.
The programmes were conducted across four venues in the province:
10 September – Masjid-un-Noor, Stanger
16 September – Mountain Rise Masjid, Pietermaritzburg
17 September – Masjidus Salaam, Musgrave (Durban)
23 September – Albersville Masjid, Port Shepstone
The initiative aimed to highlight the significant contributions of the early Imams, Apas, Muazzins and Ulama who arrived between 1860 and 1960, acknowledging their unwavering efforts, service, and leadership. These stalwarts were acknowledged for their dedication to the preservation of Deen, establishment of masājid and madaris, organisations, community services and their selfless efforts to uplift the Muslim community under challenging circumstances.
Each gathering served as a reminder of the importance of connecting with our spiritual heritage and continuing the noble legacy of those who came before us. Attendees were encouraged to emulate the sincerity, simplicity, and commitment of these early torchbearers of Islam.
The programme coincided with the 25 Year commemorative theme of Darul Ihsan Centre in 2025. It also formed part of Darul Ihsan’s broader mission of Guidance, Ubuntu, and Empowerment, promoting awareness, unity, and gratitude within the Muslim community of KwaZulu-Natal.
