Q: Is it permissible to fall in prostration (Sajdah) out of Salah?

A: It is permissible to make Sajdah out of Salah, for example, Sajdat us Shukr on being bestowed with a bounty or being saved from a calamity. Similarly, Sajdat ut Tilawah is a Wajib Sajdah done on reciting any of the verses of Quran whose recitation renders a Sajdah Wajib. This Sajdah is prescribed even when a person recites such verses of the Quran out of Salah. It is also permissible to make other Sajdahs besides the above provided that such a practice is not deemed by the person doing the Sajdah or other people as an act having any specific virtue.
