Q: Muslims today follow football teams and other sports with lots of ardency, passion and energy. People make dua for victory of their team and spend hours in discussion on results, players, teams and results. Young children will be seen idolising their favourite player and sporting jerseys with his name imprinted on it. Is this desirable and okay for a Muslim. Can we make dua for our team ?
Q: Social media platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter, facebook and others allow a person to post a profile picture with one’s portfolio and contact detail. People use this to post a photograph of themselves, spouse, child, some animate object or a picture of something relating to their personal life. Is this permissible? Please explain.
Q: Performing Salah on a journey can become difficult especially on a long flight when 2 or 3 Salah need to be performed in flight. Is it necessary to perform the Salah in the time whilst on journey or is one allowed to forego the prayer and perform it later? What happens when a person is travelling on an aircraft and the flight attendants refuse permission to stand and face Qiblah for Salah?
Q: On the issue of begging I would like to know whether it is compulsory to give to every beggar that comes to your car or home if you are in possession of extra monies? Eg: does it matter if you can see the person is on drugs or is drunk or is well dressed etc.
Q: We want to make a secret Nikah ?
I am a student and want to know if a secret nikah is valid in Islam? I am interested in a boy and he is also a student and are told we can only marry after studies which is in a few years. Will making nikah to stay away from sin be the right way to go ?
I was advised to speak to Ulama regarding certain disturbing blogs authored by Muslims that bring out the tales and experiences of boys and girls seeking marriage partners, their experiences and other gossip. The blogs are written in a very comical and unpleasant manner, making a mockery of people and serve as cheap gossip and entertainment for the reader with very minimal or no benefit at all.
Q: A person has a business and is in need of a loan. A friend agrees to lend R50 000, but the friend says he wants a share of his sales i.e. he will invest in his business, but he must be paid R65000.
If he repays him back R65000 , he will lend him the money.
Is such a transaction allowed?
Q: When making an extra nafl Qurbani, over and above one’s wajib Qurbani, can one make the niyyat (intention) for Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and include deceased relatives and other Muslims in the reward of one animal ? Also can one intend all deceased Muslims with one animal ?
Q: If a person did not perform Qurbani when it was compulsory on him, what should be done ? Can he give the monetary value in charity or will it be better to slaughter the animal or get a reputable organisation to do it for him?
Q: What is the ruling regarding women shaping their eyebrows?
A: It is not permissible for women to neaten, trim, shape or cut their eyebrows. However, if the eyebrows appear grossly abnormal, extremely long and thick then they may be trimmed slightly for them to appear normal. (Ahsanul Fatawa Vol. 8 Pg. 76)
There is a Hadith which mentions that women who remove such hair are accursed. The Hadith appears in Sahih Bukhari #4886, Sahih Muslim #2125, Sunan Abi Dawood #4691, Sunan ibni Majah #1989, Sunanud Daarimi Vol.2 Pg. 363 #2647.
