Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA)'s name and title

Q: What was the name of Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu anhu) and what were his titles and the reason for them?

A: The name of Hazrat Abu Bakr was Abdullah. His most famous title is As Siddeeq. There is a difference of opinion regarding when he was awarded this title. According to some he was known by this blessed title even during the time of Jahiliyyah because of his outstanding quality of truthfulness. However, the more popular opinion is that on the occasion of Mi’raj he was given this title. The reason was that he accepted and believed in the miraculous journey without any hesitation. (Mustadrak Lil Hakim). According to another narration in Mustadrak Hazrat Ali (Radiyllahu Anhu) took a qasm that the title of Siddeeq was revealed from the heavens for Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu)

There are various opinions about his title of Ateeq as well. Some say that he was called Ateeq because of his handsomeness. Others say that on account of his eagerness for virtue he was named Ateeq. According to the narration of Tabrani and Mustadrak lil Hakim, the reason for the title of Ateeq is the announcement of his salvation from Jahannam. Rasulullah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever desires to see a person who has been saved from the Fire should look at Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu).”

He was given the title of Al Atqa in the Quran Shareef in Surah Al Lail. Allah Ta’ala says, “Soon the one who is Atqa (has the most Taqwa) will be distanced from it (Jahannam). The one who spends his wealth to purify it.” (Surah Al Lail v.17/18).

This was revealed regarding Hazrat Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) when he spent his wealth to set free seven Muslims who were slaves in Makkah. (Maariful Quran)
