In Matjhabeng, Free State, a solar power project estimated to cost R1.4 billion is expected to power 80 000 homes.
Aimed to combat the growing energy crisis, the Grootspruit solar power plant will contribute 75 Megawatts of electricity to the Eskom national grid, and is expected to be commissioned in 2025.
“This project will be supplying to Eskom’s national grid. 150 000 panels are going to produce enough electricity for 80 000 homes… while at the same time creating economic opportunities for local communities,” said Robert Skjodt, CEO of ENGIE group.
Alongside other projects that aim to drive the economy in the area, the Matjhabeng Municipality is expected to turn into the country’s energy hub.
