South African citizens amongst 121 nationalities approved for Hajj 1442

SAUDI ARABIA: A total of 121 nationalities will be represented at Hajj 1442, including South African citizens living in Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has confirmed that a wide variety of nationalities will make up the 60,000 accredited Hujjaj who will undergo the blessed trip.

All of them are either Saudi passport holders or foreigners legally living and working in the country.

The final number of pilgrims was cut down from an initial application list that numbered more than 558,000.

This year's Hajj will also witness the implementation of the smart Hajj card which will be used by all pilgrims and workers, allowing cardholders to benefit from a package of services, including entering camps and hotels, and using means of transportation.

The card can track missing pilgrims or those that have been separated from their groups.

Only vaccinated people are being allowed to undertake the journey in 2021. According to Saudi authorities, this has been done with the aim of ensuring their rituals can be carried out as safely as possible.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom’s interior ministry has announced a strict fine of SR10,000 (R38,500) for anyone found attempting to access Masjidul Haram in Makkah Mukarramah or the areas around it without a permit. The rule kicked in on Monday, 5 July, and will run until the end of the Hajj period.

The same law applies for Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat, with the fine doubled if the offense is carried out twice.
