In an effort to curb the disaster rate caused by continuous and heavy rainfall, the National Institute for Health and Care Research is in the process of developing an early warning system, focusing on eThekwini and Ugu municipalities. It is a collaborative effort between the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the University of the West of Scotland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the University of Portsmouth.
The University of Portsmouth’s Professor David Ndzi said, “In the Weather project, we are looking at an early warning system that will focus and predict rain and flooding. It will also detect disease symptoms outbreaks. Climate change is no longer a prediction… It is something you are experiencing.”
