Muharram

1st Month of the year

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, known as Allah's month and declared 'sacred' in the Quran. Allah Ta'ala says "Four of them (Zul-Qadah, Zul-Haj, Muharram and Rajab) are sacred." (Surah Tawbah)

Special Virtues

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is the fasting of Allah's month of Muharram." (Sahih Muslim)

"The one that keeps a fast in the month of Muharram will receive the reward of thirty fasts for each fast." (Tabrani)

The Day of Ashura

The 10th of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days known as the day of 'Ashura'. We learn from Ahadith that: "This fast is a compensation for the (minor) sins of the past year." (Sahih Muslim)

"Observe the fast of Ashura and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it or a day after." (Bayhaqi)

Generosity

Be generous to one's family and spend more on them than what is normally spent.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "One who generously spends on his family on the day of Ashura, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year." (Bayhaqi)

Read and Learn

The month of Muharram presents an opportunity for us to learn about the great sacrifices made by the Sahabah RA and pious people of the past.

We should read, listen to and learn about the events of Karbala and other battles to enhance our love and knowledge for the Sahabah RA.
