Bias and negative reporting against Islam has become a very real phenomenon in the media, especially in the international press.

Unfortunately racism is common at all levels of social interaction and within cultural groups. It is not unique to South Africa; however it may be more noticeable here since we were exposed to decades of racism under apartheid.Racism comprises of a long list of things, inter alia, language barrier, skin colour, status, wealth, distinction, etc. In most cases we are blind to all these aspects of discrimination; therefore we need to fight these ‘disease’ at every level.Religious leaders and groups should take up the struggle against all forms of segregation. It would be worth mentioning that the Muslim community has a dedicated forum specially set-up to address issues of racism – it’s called the “Änti-Racism Education Forum”.
