On Saturday, 13th July, the Daughters of the Ummah youth group hosted an exciting afternoon introducing archery to young muslimahs.
The event took place at Madrasah Ihsan in Durban, Sea Cow Lake, wherein almost 40 attendees aged between 9-15 were present.
The event opened with a Qirat recitation, and was followed by skilled instructors from the Tūsbūn Academy providing an introduction to barebone archery, which began with lessons about the Islamic significance behind the activity. An instructor stressed the virtues and benefits of archery in both worlds, as well as the mental and physical merit it entails.
The instructor then introduced the youth to different types of bows and their uses. The excellence of the Arab bow was emphasised, as it was the type used by the beloved Prophet Mohammed (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).
The instructor then helped motivate the attendees to try archery with confidence. Targets were set up for practice outside the madrasah, followed by detailed demonstrations on how to handle a bow, as well as observing safety. The eager youth then took turns to hold the bows and fire arrows with the friendly help and guidance of the instructors.
The event closed with refreshments, allowing attendees a chance to get to know one another.
“It was nice,” remarked several youth.
“I have tried archery before, but this style was new to me,” said another. “It was interesting.”
