DHC Relief Team partners with Glen Earle Clinic to commemorate World AIDS Day 2020

World AIDS Day is commemorated each year on the 1st of December and is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have died.

South Africa has been relentless in its mission to turn the HIV, AIDS, and TB epidemics around and there are notable achievements to celebrate.

Over the past 20 years there have been many scientific advances in HIV treatment and there is now a much better understanding of the virus with optimism around the benefits of treatment as prevention, and progress towards a cure and vaccine.

However, despite these advances, stigma and discrimination still persist for many people living with, or affected by HIV.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for all South Africans to remind themselves that HIV is still a reality and that it is incumbent on all of us to continue fighting prejudice, stigma and discrimination.

In the spirit of ‘World Aids Day’ the Relief Team of Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre (DHC) partnered with the staff members of the Glen Earle Clinic on Friday 4 December 2020 to observe World aids Day.

The event took place at the Glen Earle Clinic Sports Ground in Newlands East and was attended by some 200 people – most with HIV and AIDS.

DHC supported the Glen Earle Clinic event by giving each person a snack pack consisting of bottled water, an assortment of fruit, biscuits and groceries.

Sister Trisha Govender co-ordinated the programme and welcomed the Relief Team and expressed her, her team members and the patients’ thanks and appreciation to DHC for supporting them over the last few years and regularly distributing snack packs to patients at the Clinic which provides some relief during their long wait for treatment.

A DHC Relief Team member addressed the attendees in the theme of “We Are in This Together.”

These outreaches are made possible through the generous contributions and ongoing support of the Muslim community.
