Al Ihsan Relief Team provides food relief for victims of fire incident at informal settlement

On Sunday 25 October 2020, in the late hours of the night, a huge fire broke out at the New Germany Road informal settlement resulting in 412 dwellings being razed to the ground with 900 residents left without homes and an adult male sustaining first degree burns.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

At first light on Monday 26 October the Al Ihsan Relief Team – in conjunction with Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre – was requested by EThekwini Disaster Management officials to provide relief for the beleaguered residents.

On arrival at the site, the Al Ihsan Relief Team were met by Mr Dan Mathebula and Ms Zandile Mkhize, committee members of the settlement and were also met by Mr Malcolm Canham and Mr Themba Mdalose, officials from EThekwini Disaster Management to assess the situation.

All agreed that the immediate relief required would be to provide meals in the evening for all the affected residents of the settlement.

The Al Ihsan Relief Team committed to supply the meals and, by 18:00, the team members delivered 900 hot-packed meals, 200 loaves of bread with fillings to Councillor Busi Ndlovu, Mr Dan Mathebula, Ms Zandile Mkhize and a team of residents at the settlement who facilitated the distribution of the food provisions to all the residents.

Councillor Busi Ndlovu, settlement committee members and many residents expressed their sincere gratitude to the Al Ihsan Relief Team for the food provision.

The Al Ihsan Relief Team and Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre works closely with EThekwini Disaster Management and is on call ’24/7’ in the event of any emergencies within the eThekwini Municipality.

These outreaches are made possible through the generous contributions and ongoing support of the Muslim community.
