He was approximately 13 years old when Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) passed away. He is one of the best and most knowledgeable people of this Ummah in the field of Tafseer and Fiqh. He is known as Hibrul Ummah and Bahrul Ummah. Hazrat Umar (R) included him in his council with the senior Sahabah y when he was only 15. Towards the end of his life he lost his eyesight. He passed away in Taif in 68 A.H. aged 71. Many Sahabah and Tabi’een narrate Hadith from him. He has narrated approximately 1160 Ahadith.
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas y narrates that he saw Jibreel u twice and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) made Dua for him twice.
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (R) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) held me to his chest and said, “O Allah! Teach him wisdom.” (Bukhari) In another narration it is stated, “O Allah! Teach him the book (Quran).” (Bukhari)
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (R) narrates, “Once Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) went to relieve himself and I left water for his Wudhu. When he came out he asked, ‘Who placed this here?’ He was informed (that it was me). He then made Dua, ‘O Allah! Grant him understanding of Deen.”(Bukhari)
