He was the paternal cousin of Hazrat Umar ibn Khattab (R) and was also married to his sister. Saeed ibn Zaid (R) and his wife were instrumental in Hazrat Umar’s (R) coming into Islam. He participated in every battle, except the battle of Badr. Notwithstanding his non-participation, he was allocated a share of the booty because he was sent to gather intelligence about the Makkan caravan.
He passed away in 51 A.H. at the age of 73 in Aqeeq and was buried in Madinah Munawwarah.
Urwah ibn Zubair (Rahimahullah) narrates: “A woman named Arwa bint Aus, filed a petition before Marwan ibn Hakam - the governor of Madinah Munawwarah - against Hazrat Sa’eed ibn Zayd t, regarding him usurping her land.” Hazrat Saeed ibn Zayd (R) said to Marwan: “Should I take away the land of this woman after what I have heard from Rasulullah r?” Marwan asked : “What did you hear from Rasulullah r?” I have heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) say : “If anyone takes a span of land wrongfully, it will be tied around him like a ‘necklace’ (and forced) to a depth of seven earths.” Marwan then said to him: “I will not ask you for any proof after this.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
