Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (R)

Title: Abu Hurayarah (father of a kitten). He was given this title by Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) because he had a kitten with him.

Islam: He embraced Islam in the year of the conquest of Khaybar which was 7 A.H. and as Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) passed away in 11 A.H. he remained with Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for 4 years.

Status & Achievements:

He was among the Ashabus Suffah. These were residents of Musjidun Nabawi. They had no regular source of income. They were the guests of Nabi r, who transferred to them Sadaqah and whatever gifts he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) received. He would sometimes go without food for days on end and sometimes would behave like a lunatic due to excessive hunger. In spite of such difficulties, he was all the time occupied in memorising the Ahadeeth of Nabi r.

This enabled him to narrate such a large number of Ahadeeth. Ulama have attributed to him as many as 5 374 Ahadeeth. People used to marvel at how he could memorise so many Ahadeeth in such a short period. He explains this himself saying: “I once complained to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) that I hear many Ahadeeth from you but I forget them. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to me, 'Spread out your shawl!' So I spread it out. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) made some signs on the shawl with his own Mubarak hands. Then Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, 'Now wrap this shawl around you!' So I wrapped around me and I never forgot anything after that.” (Bukhari)

He used to recite 12 000 Istighfar daily. He also had a Tasbeeh with 2 000 knots and would not sleep until he had recited Subhanallah on each of them. He divided the night into three portions between himself, his wife and his slave. When one completed performing Ibadah they would awaken the next one. When the second one was finished with Ibadah they would awaken the third one.

He passed away in 57 A.H. in Madeenah Munawwarah at the age of 78.
