Nikah in the Masjid

In another Hadith it is stated, "He who forsakes my Sunnah is not of me."  (Sahih Muslim)

From the narrations cited above, it is established that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) attributed the noble institution of marriage to his noble way of life. The special mention of marriage serves to highlight its importance in Islam. It also emphasises the need for Nikah to be conducted in the Sunnah manner. The deprivation of one who forsakes the Sunnah is immeasurable.

For a marriage to enjoy happiness and success, it must be premised on the prophetic formula. Adopting the guidance of the Sunnah in marriage will attract divine blessings.

The Sunnah of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has provided us with guidance at every step of this important event. The commencement of this noble act of must be in the best of places - Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Announce this marriage, and perform it in the Masjid…" (Tirmizi)

The sacred precincts of the Masjid will be a safeguard against any undesirable activity occurring at the Nikah. The sanctity of the Masjid cannot be compromised, hence the margin for deviation is very negligible.

Regrettably, a tendency has developed in the Muslim community to hold the Nikah at a hall or venue where guests are received, other than the Masjid.

Hereunder are etiquette and guidelines that should be considered for a Muslim marriage:

1. Perform the Nikah in the Masjid as per the noble teachings of the Sunnah.

2. Maintain simplicity and avoid extravagance.

3. Avoid practices that are in contrast with the Sunnah.

4. Uphold Muslim identity by ensuring that no practice that resembles the ceremony of other faiths is practiced at a Muslim marriage, in the name of religious tolerance.

5. Practice the Islamic way in all aspects of the marriage ceremony
