Closing the business for Jummuah

Q: Please forward me more clarity on closing at Jumma time, I have a business and need to know what’s the ruling on closing Fridays at Jumma. What time, is it after the Azaan goes? Is it Khutbah time? Is it the Salaat time? Is it possible for me to leave non-Muslim staff to run the business during the hour of Jumma?

Jazakallah

A: You should close your business when the Azaan goes for Jumuah Salaah. The Quraan Shareef states: “O Those who Believe (Muslims)! When the call (Azaan) is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on the day of Friday (Jumu’ah Salaah), hasten to the remembrance of Allah (Jumu’ah religious talk and Salaah) and leave off trade (and every other thing), that is better for you if you knew!” (Surah Jumu’ah V.9)

This refers to the first Azaan for the Jumuah Salaah.

Accordingly, it is not befitting for a Muslim business to operate his business when the Jumuah is in progress even if non-Muslims or those upon whom Jumuah is not obligatory are running it. The sanctity and respect for Jumuah demands that a Muslim close his business, irrespective of who is running it.

In the unfortunate circumstances where the business or factory has to remain open during the time of Jumuah (and cannot be closed) e.g. petrol station, whilst under the supervision of non-Muslims then the income accrued will not be deemed to be Haraam or Makrooh.
And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best
