Thousands of Palestinians - arriving on buses from distant regions of Palestine - amassed at Masjid al-Aqsa for a series of maintenance, cleaning and educational activities last Saturday.
Cleaning processes began at the historical Yusufiyah and Bab ar-Rahmah cemeteries on the outskirts of the Masjid followed by scaffolding and tents being erected within the Al Aqsa compound to house the many worshippers in Ramadan.
Volunteers washed the compound, pruned trees, removed stones, cleaned the toilets and moved outside the compound and assisted in restoring the homes of poverty-stricken families in the Old City of Jerusalem and Silwan.
A spinoff of the day's activities was the large number of customers that came and provided enormous business for the many enterprises at the souks of the Old City of Jerusalem
The day was cherished by both old and young alike. Children were afforded orientation tours of Masjid al-Aqsa and got to know its geography and history better.
Younger kids were engaged in art and craft activities and the older ones partook in competitions and crafting of banners related to al-Aqsa, which - after a long day’s work - were confiscated by the Israeli police.
However, the day was thoroughly fulfilling for its participants and succeeded in planting deep love and reverence for the blessed Masjid al-Aqsa at the beginning of the glorious month of Ramadan.
