Help on the way for families affected by floods

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has reassured the public that national government has set aside funds to assist families that were left devastated by floods experienced during the week of 21 to 24 April in KwaZulu-Natal.

President Ramaphosa, who cut short his working visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt where he attended an emergency African Union Troika Summit, was speaking at Amanzimtoti after visiting a family whose house collapsed into a sinkhole following heavy rainfall that lashed the City.

President Ramaphosa, who was accompanied by Acting Premier Sihle Zikalala, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube and eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede, said on his arrival from Egypt he immediately contacted the National Department of Treasury to release emergency funds to assist the affected families.

Mayor Gumede thanked President Ramaphosa for cutting short his trip to attend to the situation in eThekwini. “Our City was badly hit by floods when compared to other affected areas and I wish to commend President Ramaphosa for his exemplary leadership. I also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the various nongovernmental organisations and individuals for their efforts in providing emergency assistance to those in distress,” said Mayor Gumede.
