Crime - ‘Cold Brutality’

The recent spate of crimes related to murder in our country has reached alarming proportions with criminals inflicting a high-level of ‘cold brutality’ on their victims with an absolute disdain for the law.

Even worse, they are impacting mostly on women and children - the most vulnerable in our society.

According to crime statistics seven women and three children are killed every day in SA

The number of women killed in 2018/19 stood at 2771 - translating to seven women being murdered every day.

The number of children killed in 2018/2019 South Africa was 1014 - meaning about 3 children die every day as a result of murder.

Further, the number of reported sexual offences against women, murder attempts, grievous bodily harm and assault ran into thousands.

Reported crimes of sexual offences and attempts of murder against minors were equally high.

All role players in our society, be it civil, faith-based, NGO’s, respective government departments, law enforcement authorities, the Department of Justice, etc. need to work closely and create active community awareness forums in our society to end these ghastly crimes against our women and children which, if left unchecked, could eventually desensitise our nation.
