Relief Provided to victims of fire disaster at informal settlement

At least 200 people have been affected by a fire incident at an informal settlement at Gumtree Road, Kenville on Tuesday, 03 December 2019.

The EThekwini Disaster Management team promptly responded to the fire incident which started at midday at the settlement in Ward 34.

The fire – which was eventually extinguished by the Fire and Emergency Services of the EThekwini municipality – was fanned by strong winds causing much destruction in a short while.

At least 150 shack dwellings were razed to the ground affecting about 200 residents – fortunately, there were no injuries nor fatalities.

Disaster Management officials Mr Zamani Mtshali and Mr Themba Mdalose, who were on site, assessed the situation and immediately contacted Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre with a requisition for blankets and by 15:00 the Relief team of the Centre delivered 100 blankets to the site.

The Disaster Management Team has secured temporary shelter for those displaced by the fire incident and procedures are in place to further assist the affected persons.

The officials of Ethekwini Disaster Management and many residents expressed their sincere thanks to the Centre’s Relief Team for providing the blankets.

EThekwini Disaster Management works closely with the Relief Team of Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre for matters of civil emergencies in the greater Durban area.

Darul Ihsan Humanitarian Centre thanks all our contributors for their unwavering support in making these relief outreaches to those in distress possible.
