Following Australia which implemented a similar ban, France will be the second country in the world to follow this trend, which arose from concern for children’s screen-time and the impacts social media have on child development and mental health.
“France can be a pioneer in Europe in a month: we can change the lives of our young people and our families, and perhaps also change the destiny of our country in terms of independence,” said former prime minister, Gabriel Attal.
The bill is expected to be passed by mid-February, and implemented on September 1st. Social media platforms will then be forced to deactivate existing accounts not compliant with the age limit by December 31st.
