‘Al Ihsan Relief’ (AIR) provides relief for displaced residents at Foreman Road Informal Settlement

A fire incident at 00:10 on Monday, 01 January 2018 at the Foreman Road Informal Settlement (Clare Estate, Durban) destroyed 35 shack dwellings and displaced at least 80 residents.

Fortunately there were no fatalities and none of the residents sustained any injuries.

After an emergency call from Ethekwini Disaster Management the Al Ihsan Relief (AIR) Team - in conjunction with Darul Ihsan Centre – visited the site at 5:30 AM to assess the situation and provide the most essential requirements to alleviate the plight of those affected.

By midday the ‘AIR’ Relief Team distributed 100 packed meals and 30 blankets to the affected residents.

The ‘AIR’ Relief Team was supported by Thandeka Vilakazi and George Kula from Ethekwini Disaster Management.

Further, another 140 packed meals for lunch and supper (total 280 meals) were provided at the settlement on Tuesday, 02 January 2018.

Thkozani Maxego and Alex Sithisa – representatives of the shack dwellers – and Ethekwini Disaster Management officials expressed their gratitude to the AIR Team for its efficient response to ‘the need of the hour.’

Ethekwini Disaster Management also commended the AIR Team for its prompt response to the crisis in view of the fact that Monday was a public holiday.

The AIR Team will continue to monitor the situation and provide further assistance if required.

‘Al Ihsan Relief’ (AIR) serves on the technical task Team of Ethekwini Disaster Management and is available on call for any civil emergency for which it can assist.

The relief outreaches of ‘AIR’ are made possible through the benevolence, generous contributions and ongoing support of the Muslim community.
