The Garden Patch Project

Tending to plants in vegetable gardens teaches children responsibility and teamwork. It provides an opportunity to bring nature to life through hands-on learning. Also, learners, teachers and parents can all enjoy the sense of community that comes from sharing in this experience.

Darul Ihsan Centre - through its ‘Muslim Empowerment Fund’ (MEF) - has introduced ‘The Garden Patch’ project specifically for schools where learners can experience how seeding, soil, water and sun come together and transform into a plant.

Participating schools are to allocate a small section of arable land within their property for a simple vegetable garden.

The MEF will supply all the seeds, seedlings, ‘good’ soil and fertilizer (if necessary), etc. for ‘The Garden Patch’ and the respective schools/learners will - by their direct involvement - cultivate the land.

The purpose of this project is for it to become a school environmental programme whereby learners are actively engaged in a practical hands-on approach in producing fresh, wholesome and healthy vegetables for their own consumption and to supply surplus produce to their respective communities.

The project was introduced in 2013 and thus far seven schools have adopted the project.

Further, ‘The Garden Patch’ has now been extended to members of the public and municipalities who have available land, resources and manpower to get involved in a holistic and enterprising community project.

The Ethekwini Municipality - in a recent and first joint exercise with a resident and the MEF - has made available 4,000 square metres of land in Quarry Heights for growing vegetables in the best interest of supplying fresh produce to the surrounding community.
