While the incidence of begging is a sad and real phenomenon in our society given the scale of poverty and unemployment which has been exacerbated by the impact of the lockdown, it seems that in reality many beggars are not Muslims but are doing so under the guise of ‘Muslim attire’.
It is not for us to be judgemental in the worthiness of a beggar or to question them being deserving, however, by patronising these individuals we are inadvertently encouraging a ‘begging trend’ which seems to have become very lucrative. It also potentially leads to traffic impediments and possible traffic violations.
Muslims are passionate about charity and handsomely contribute to community upliftment through Muslim welfare organisations who are active in providing relief to the needy.
Our appeal to the Ummah to be mindful.
And Allah knows best
