Universally, miscreants … businessmen and all others … are warned about giving less in measure and weight, and/or taking more than is due to them.
In the Noble Quran, Surah al Mutaf-fi-feen deals with the above subject matter in great detail. The gist of the meaning of Mutaf-fi-feen, “is to lessen in measure and weight”. The commencing verses of this Surah, severely warns those who measure and weigh less in their transactions. In fact Allah Ta’ala reprimands them in the severest terms, and worse still, curses them with afflictions, agonies and sufferings!
Consequently, the word al-Mizaan inadvertently refers to justice, equality and being fair. Ah, these are indeed vital characteristics of a Believer. Muslims should carefully ponder over this word al-Mizaan. Allah Ta’ala states in the Quran-e-Majied :
“And measure correctly and do not be dishonest in weight.” (Surah al-Rahmãn, V. 8)
Nabi (Salallahu Alayi Wasallam) is reported to have said:
“On the Day of Qiyamat a very large and big man will appear --- but by Allah Ta’ala --- he will be less in weight than a mosquito.”
On the day of Qiyamat, the deeds of man will be weighed. Glad tidings and honour to that person whose good deeds will be heavy on the scales on that day it matters most. Sadly, many sceptics harbour doubt about the al-Mizaan (the scale) and the weighing of the deeds of this world. Some cynics even question : how will the deeds be placed on the scales?
Once Nabi (Salallahu Alayi Wasallam) remarked to those who laughed at ibn Masood (RA) for having skinny legs.
“By the One who holds my soul in His Hands, on the Day of Qiyamat these two legs will be
heaver and weightier on the al-Mizaan (the scale), than the mountain of Uhud.”
The great jurist (Faqi), Allama Qurtubi (RA) quotes Ulama who hold the view that after reckoning (Hisaab-Kitaab, i.e. accountability) of the Day of Qiyamat, the deeds will be placed on al-Mizaan (the scale). The reason for al-Mizaan (the scale) after Hisaab-Kitaab, is that the scale will obviously change once the questioning is over. It is only after this process, that the good deeds will be placed on al-Mizaan (the scale).
