The Four ‘Amaal (Deeds)

Man’s actions (‘Amaal) can either bring him closer to his Creator, or distance him from the Creator’s kindness and love. There are those deeds/actions that draw one to the brink of Allah Ta’ala’s ocean of mercy in very quick time.

Man’s actions (‘Amaal) can either bring him closer to his Creator, or distance him from the Creator’s kindness and love. There are those deeds/actions that draw one to the brink of Allah Ta’ala’s ocean of mercy in very quick time.

It is the desire of every Muslim to please Allah Ta’ala in order to obtain contentment in the hereafter. Every good deed … however small and insignificant it may seem … is a way to achieve “Allah-nearness” and “Allah-happiness”.  Of the many “Allah-pleasing” deeds/ actions (‘Amaal), four “easy-to-practice” deeds are:

1. Growing a fist length of beard

As it is waajib to perform three raka’ats of witr salaah, eid salaah, etc., likewise, the growing of a beard is waajib.

In Bukhari Shareef, Nabi (Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) is reported to have stated: “Oppose (the ways of) the non-Muslims, keep the beard and trim the moustache.”

This beautiful Sunnah-beard ought to be: on the chin; on the right and left sides of the cheeks; and fist length, all-round.

2. Leave the ankles exposed

This applies to any clothing worn from the top, including a jubba, long kurta, pants or lungi. Such garments should not hang below the ankles.

A Hadith in Bukhari Shareef, states that Nabi (Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) stated: “That which is (hanging) below the ankle will be in the fire (of jahannam).”

In the light of the above hadith, it can be concluded that it is compulsory for men to keep the ankles exposed.

3. Protection against evil glances

Generally people … both men and women … are very negligent and careless about this injunction of Allah Ta’ala. One deliberately casts evil glances upon the opposite gender. The Noble Quran clearly orders:  “(O Nabi), enjoin believing men to cast down their looks and guard their private parts.”

And enjoin believing women to cast down their looks and guard their private parts and not reveal their adornments, except that which is revealed of itself.” (C 24; V 30 & 31)

Additionally, Nabi (Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “The Zina of the eyes is the seeing (of evil)”. (Bukhari)

Indeed, it is a very serious crime to see evil and one should at all times protect oneself from casting evil glances upon the opposite gender.

4. Safeguarding the heart

Like one needs to protect the sight, similarly one needs to protect the heart. Effectively, this means not to fantasise about an evil. One is an evil-thought that occurs in the “mind” or “heart”, but to deliberately allow and entertain the haram fantasy is most undesirable.

To transgress or disobey any one of these deeds causes immense displeasure of Allah Ta’ala … May Allah Ta’ala save us all.
