SHABAAN – A NEGLECTED MONTH

The month of Shabaan is a very important month in the Islamic calender. When asked about this month Nabi-e-Kareem (Salllallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said it is one which many people are neglectful of. Various narrations detail that apart from Ramadaan Nabi-e-Kareem (Salllallahu Alaihi Wasallam) loved to fast the most in the month of Shabaan as it is the month in which the deeds are presented to Allah SWT.

There were times where besides the Monday and Thursday fasts on which Nabi-e-Kareem (Salllallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was steadfast, he would fast so much that people thought he would not stop fasting, and times where he would stop fasting such that people thought he would never fast again. Such balance of alternating between fasting and not fasting, sleeping and worship etc. is therefore from the Sunnah, and Nabi-e-Kareem (Salllallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me. In various narrations Nabi-e-Kareem (Salllallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had advised the Sahabah RA that their wives, families, and selves all had a right over them, therefore they should be careful to fulfill these rights.

Exaggeration or excesses in Deen such as fasting continuously, foregoing sleep and marriage, hermitism etc. are prohibited, as Allah Ta’ala says in the Quran, ‘O believers, do not declare as forbidden the good things which Allah has made lawful for you’. The best of nafl fasts is that where the body does not become so weak preventing it from performing another act of ibadah superior to it.

The month of Shabaan should be used to prepare for Ramadaan by exerting ourselves in extra ibadah and particularly tilawah of the Quran, in this way the soul will be ready and pleased to obey Ar-Rahman in the month of Ramadaan.
