Hazrat Zaynab bint Jahsh (R)

Birth: 17 years before Prophethood

Zaynab bint Jahsh was the cousin of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) - her mother was the sister of the father of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). She accepted Islam in the early years. She married Hazrat Zayd ibn Harithah (R) but this marriage could not continue and she was divorced. After her Iddat she married Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) by the command of Allah Ta'ala as mentioned in Surah Al Ahzab. This Nikah took place in 5 A.H. when she was 35 years old. She felt honoured that while all the other respected wives were given in marriage to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) by their guardians, it was Allah Ta'ala who facilitated this Nikah for her.

She was a most generous woman and spent excessively in the path of Allah. She also fasted frequently.

Hazrat Ayesha (Radiyallahu Anha) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to his respected wives:

“The one that will reach me first (after death) is the one with the longest hands.” (Sahih Muslim)

Regarding this virtue, the respected wives understood this to be literally referring to the physical length of their hands. So they measured their hands and found that the hands of Hazrat Saudah (Radiyallahu Anha) were the longest. However, when Hazrat Zaynab (Radiyallahu Anha) was the first of them to pass away they understood that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was referring to the most generous of his respected wives.

She passed away in 20 AH at the age of 50. Hazrat Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) led her Janazah Salah.
